The roll is not a unit
Walk the aisle: mega rolls. Family rolls. Doubles. A package yelling "12 = 40 regular rolls!" — a comparison to a "regular roll" that quietly left the market years ago. Every brand defines every one of these terms differently, and they re-define them whenever it helps.
There is exactly one honest number on the package, printed small: the sheet count. Divide the price by it and the theater collapses.

When a paper product "keeps its price," check the sheets. The roll diameter stays the same (the cardboard core got fatter), the package art doesn't change, and the count drops from 150 sheets to 138. The price per roll is flat; the price per sheet went up 8% — and nobody had to announce anything.
That's why every receipt on this site leads with the per-unit number. Per-sheet pricing is shrinkflation-proof: they can shrink the roll, but they can't shrink your denominator.
The bulk math (and its one limit)
Per sheet, the big multi-roll boxes beat small packs nearly every time we check — same pattern as diapers, same reason: you're buying more of the product and less of the packaging and shelf-handling.
The limit is storage, and honestly — paper towels store themselves. They don't expire, they don't melt, and the garage shelf doesn't judge. This is the single easiest category to bulk up on.
Add the trip math — a store run costs about $14.45 — $1.45 in gas (11 mi round trip at 26 mpg, $3.42/gal) and $13.00 in time (52 minutes at $15/hr) before the towels go in the cart — and hauling paper home in a minivan is paying extra for the privilege of carrying it yourself. How do I compare paper towel prices across brands?
Ignore the roll count entirely and divide price by total sheets (the sheet count is on the label, in small print). 'Mega', 'family', and 'double' rolls mean different things at every brand — sheets are the only stable unit. Our table does the division for you.
What's a 'regular roll' when the package says 12 = 40?
A marketing unit, not a measurement. The 'regular roll' being multiplied hasn't been sold in years — it exists so bigger numbers can go on the package. Sheet count and sheet size are printed on the same label and are the real numbers.
Are cheap paper towels a false economy?
Sometimes — a towel you use two of is worth half its sheet price. Where we have thickness/ply differences on record we say so in the item's notes. For most household cleanup, mid-tier sheets at a good per-sheet price win.
